Dive Centre Instructor Development Course

PADI All Smiles - 2 AcrossAs a PADI Pro, you do things others only dream of. Whether you want to work in a local dive centre part-time to get away from your normal job, work at a resort in the tropics, or on a live-aboard dive boat, the adventure of a lifetime is yours for the taking.

But what do you really need to become a great Dive Instructor?

...brain cells that still function, a sense of humour,

and a bloke named Keith in Auckland...

Sure you need to understand the theory, but Dive Instructing is really about dealing with people. That's why you need Keith Cardwell! His job is to develop your faith in your abilities, because that's exactly what you must do for your students. You never forget just how much they're trusting you. Instructing can be highly stressful, unless you can gain the trust of your students, solve problems before they develop, and still have the time and energy to make it fun. Keith has trained over a thousand Instructors in New Zealand, Australia, and the USA to cope under pressure and deal with the uncertainties that teaching can create.

You'll enjoy Keith's laid-back training style and see why trust makes all the difference. You'll get a truly intensive learning experience in a highly professional training environment and, with Keith, IDC Prep and MSDT Prep courses are free of charge*. And if you don't pass your IE, he'll pay for you to resit!*

*Conditions apply.

PADI Pool Briefing - 2 AcrossWhy choose Dive Centre?

We can talk about our facilities, and our history, but as we have said already, teaching diving is about people. Our Course Director, Keith Cardwell has been in the Dive Industry for more than 28 years, has trained more than 1000 Instructors, established several 5* Instructor Development Centres and lived and worked as a Course Director in Australia, New Zealand, the Republic of Maldives, and the U.S.A.

As well as other related qualifications, he also holds a Masters Degree in Education with a major in Lifelong Learning. No-one in NZ, and few in the world have more combination of experience and training, and this offers an ideal background for advising you on career potentials within the recreational diving industry.

  1. We encourage you to attend our Open Water classes to assist (team teach with) our Instructors prior to, during, and after your course is completed. We start an Open Water course almost every week, and you will be given as much assistance as you require to make that transition from the classroom to the job itself.
  2. PADI Gear Assembly - 2 AcrossAnyone enrolling on our IDC's is given a FREE Instructor Development Preparatory (IDC Prep Course-valued between $250 and $400). This means no surcharge for "extra" training that you should be getting in the first place. After all, what is an Instructor Development Course for?
  3. As an IDC candidate you get an extra "kick start" in your new profession with a FREE MSDT Preparatory Course (valued at more than $850). (Some Conditions apply)
  4. If after successful completion of your IDC you are not successful at your Instructor Examination (IE), your next IE will be paid for you directly to PADI. (Some Conditions apply).
  5. Any PADI materials you need are provided at normal PADI "Cost" price.
  6. Tank and weightbelt rental for the IDC and IE is included in your IDC course fee. Plus Discounts on any Equipment purchases.
  7. If you have a current working visa and Certificate of Competence, you may also have the opportunity to certify your first students at the completion of your Instructor Training Programme.
  8. Assistance will be given for finding employment through PADI's Worldwide Job Placement programme and our other International business contacts. Nearly 100% of our graduates gain employment within two to three weeks of being certified as a PADI OWSI.
  9. Anyone with an updated AI qualification or an Instructor qualification from another recreational diver training agency will be given credit towards the IDC fee.
  10. Email contact addresses are available of past students living more local to you whom you may wish to refer to.

How long does it take?

The total is 10 days full time including the IE. We start on Friday morning, and run until the following Friday. Click here to see the IDC Schedule! The PADI Instructor Examination runs on that Friday evening, Saturday all day, and Sunday all day.

What do I learn on the course?

The Dive Centre IDC makes learning easy through instructional system design and cutting edge teaching media. The IDC, with its modern educational principals and manageable, positive learning structure, is more effective and efficient. The IDC is split up into two sections, the Assistant Instructor (AI) course and the Open Water Scuba Instructor program. This lets you split the program into two sections if you wish, however most will complete both sections at the same time.

How much does it cost?

It costs NZD$2100 for the IDC. (Or NZD$1100 for AI & NZD$1200 for the OWSI if you want to do them individually) The IE is payable by you directly to PADI and costs AUD$675 plus an IDC application fee of AUD$170.00, and it costs $495 for the EFRI course if you want to complete that after the IE.
