Dive Centre Instructor Development Course

PADI All Smiles - 2 Across

Whether you want to work in a local dive store part-time to help others get into this great sport, work fulltime in a Dive Store, or work at a resort in the tropics, the adventure of a lifetime is yours for the taking.

Instructing can be highly rewarding if you can gain the trust of your students, solve problems before they develop, and still have the time and energy to make it fun. Keith Cardwell our Course Director has trained over two thousand Instructors in New Zealand, Australia, and the USA to do just that, and they are, right now, all over the world!

How does the IDC work?

The PADI Instructor Training process has two phases of certification with the option of some theoretical knowledge capable of being performed on-line. This is our preferred method of delivery and effectively reduces the face-to-face learning section of the entire IDC to only four (4) days conducted over two weekends:

  • The first phase is the PADI Assistant Instructor (AI) course. This provides candidates with the training in how to teach successfully in the classroom, confined water and open water environment.
  • The second phase of the training programme is the Open Water Scuba Instructor Program (OWSI). This gives a full background of the PADI system of diver education and further opportunities for instructional development.
  • To perform the on-line section of the IDC, please advise us and we will forward on your “IDC crewpak” and instructions on how to begin your instructor training

PADI Pool Briefing - 2 Across

During your time with us you will be expected to perform limited teaching assignments and we take time to ensure that each candidate is comfortable and performing to well above acceptable levels before attendance at an Instructor Examination (IE).

We encourage (though don’t obligate you!) to attend our Open Water classes to assist (team teach with) our Instructors both prior to, and after your course is completed. We start an Open Water course almost every week, and you will be given as much assistance as you require to make the transition into the real world of teaching scuba.

What are the prerequisites?

  • PADI Divemaster, PADI Assistant Instructor or a current Instructor member in good standing with another recreational diver training organisation.
  • 18 years of age or older.

  • Full first aid certification gained within the last 2 years.
  • Confirmation of completion of the on-line section of the IDC.

How long does it take?

This is a flexible programme enabling you to complete the first part of the IDC at home and on-line. This reduces the otherwise necessary face-to-face time required with your course director and away from work. Even so, further days/evenings are available to complete the Emergency First Response Instructor (EFRI)

So:

First - complete the PADI IDC on-line

Second - attend the scheduled dates below as required:

How much does the course cost?

You complete the IDC online and pay PADI directly for that.

The IDC Course with The Dive Centre: $1500.

The EFRI course, required for final Open Water Scuba Instructor certification is NZD$500 plus the PADI application fee of AUD$180.40.

The IE and IDC application fees directly payable to PADI are AUD$825.00 and AUD$261.80 respectively.
